So, it is now 40 years since the internet was first used. Who would have thought, in the beginning, how massive it would end up in such a fairly short period?

I recall, as a young child, thinking how fortunate were people such as Alexander Graham Bell, being able to invent the telephone. Others had invented radio, tv, camera. What was there remaining for such as my generation to think of? It is lucky others had more vision than I did. We now benefit from mobile telephones, digital cameras, electronic games and many other fantastic items which I could not have even thought about as a youngster.

On the 40th anniversary of the internet, it is interesting to view the differences we have seen in the use of computers over this period. In the early years, there was no world wide web, so the internet was not the same as we think of at this time when we say we use it.

Not all businesses had access to computers forty years ago, without considering people having many PCs in their house. Even as late as the 1990’s the business where I was employed had just one computer which would connect to the web and everyone who worked for the company had to access this in order to connect with the internet.

In those days, the thought of using a search engine was an alien concept. Now Search Engine Placement is understood, by both companies and individuals, to be an integral part of internet experience. I am very happy that other people can come up with inventions to improve my daily life, and this all makes me wonder what we will be seeing forty years from today – inventions currently in their infancy or not yet even thought of.
